Tracing the Silk Road to Your Bed

Back

Silk, a natural fiber produced by silkworms (Bombyx mori), is regaining popularity due to its exceptional properties. Cultivated since the mid-3rd millennium BC, silk was a state secret in China. Its production and distribution via the Silk Road significantly contributed to the development of the global economy. Explore the rich history and extraordinary qualities of this remarkable material.

Silk has been cherished for its softness and sheen for more than 5,000 years. However, its benefits extend beyond aesthetics, particularly for skincare, hair care, and thermoregulation. In this article, we invite you to delve into the world of silk and discover the benefits of this natural fiber.

Smoother Skin…

Silk's smooth texture prevents "sleep lines" from forming, which can become permanent wrinkles over time. You might even be able to guess what side you usually sleep on...

...and Supple Skin

Silk absorbs only 11% of its weight in moisture, preserving skin hydration and allowing beauty creams to work effectively overnight. Unlike cotton sheets that absorb moisture, this precious fiber helps maintain skin elasticity and hydration.

Amino Acids and Proteins

Silk fibers contain 18 essential amino acids and proteins, which boost skin cell metabolism and reduce collagen loss. Silk bedding thus helps counteract the effects of aging. This positive action is even more significant since it is during the night that our dermis "works" and regenerates, producing up to twice as many cells as during the day.

Enzymes Against Acne and Eczema

The fabric of a silk bed set also contains enzymes that prevent the appearance of imperfections and regulate acne, providing a more hygienic and breathable sleeping surface. It is precisely for its antibacterial properties that this material is often recommended in cases of acne or eczema.

Dust and Allergens Repelled

Silk's extremely tight weave gives it a smooth and soft structure, along with hypoallergenic properties. This weave leaves very little room for dust and other irritants to penetrate, which can otherwise bother the skin and eyes. This makes it ideal for people with asthma or allergies !

Gentler on Hair

This exceptional fabric also protects hair! Its tightly woven fibers allow hair to glide over the pillowcase, reducing the excessive friction that leads to breakage. Unlike cotton, silk absorbs less sebum and moisture, helping hair stay hydrated and protected, which can delay hair loss.

Cool in Summer, Warm in Winter

Like linen, silk is renowned for its thermoregulating properties. It provides a cool sensation when it's hot, making it ideal for those prone to night sweats. In winter, its dense structure insulates and protects against the cold.

How to Care for Your Silk Sheets ?

The high-quality silk sheets offered by Elite withstand machine washing very well. Thanks to silk’s antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties, washing once a month is sufficient. Use a delicate cycle at 30°C with a special silk detergent. For extra care, place the sheets in a protective net.
Dry naturally, away from heat sources, preferably flat or by hanging on a line without clothespins. Finally, iron the sheets when they are still slightly damp, inside out, at a low temperature, and possibly over a cloth. Do not use steam!
